Ghanaian Kuapa Kokoo cocoa farmers visit to schools  5th March 2009

Fairtrade Fortnight 2009

Comfort Kumeah and Christiana  Ohene-Aygare, guests of the Co-op,  visited Cradlehall Primary and 2 Geography classes at Fortrose Academy as well as the Fairtrade Group in that school.  They spoke passionately to enthusiastic young people about the difference Fairtrade agreements have made to their lives.

The main points taken on board by classes were:

·          how democratic Kuapa Kokoo is – democracy, transparency, equity and accountability are their key words

·          how corrupt the old system was with the purchaser cheating producers with unfair scales etc. Under the new system the Recorder is elected, ensuring transparency and equity.

·          how surprised they were that  still only 7 percent of Kuapa Kokoo cocoa is sold on fairtrade terms

·          how important it therefore is to promote the fairtrade message

·          just how much of a difference the 2 premiums make: the top up if the market price drops and the  social premium. (The latter is US$ 150 per ton) Comfort’s community had benefited from a corn mill and Christiana’s from a hand dug well.

·          Cradlehall children were delighted to see that Comfort was photographed in the Fairtrade newsletter, that was pinned to their board, which they had downloaded from the Internet
