Developing Global Citizens

ECO-WEEK 2010

Supporting St Joseph's ECO WEEK, helping to embed Eco-Schools' themes in the new  curriculum.

This class was exploring global waste issues.

Others looked at water, energy, fair trade and human rights.

All the thinking and questioning was around how we can live more sustainably and why we should be trying to.

Teachers were using ways that develop important themes such as enterprise, citizenship, sustainable development, international education and creativity in a range of contexts.

Learning that relates to these themes is therefore built in to the experiences and outcomes across the curriculum areas.

This approach reduces the need for other layers of planning across the curriculum. (Building the Curriculum)

Ferintosh Primary - Africa Project

Highland One World Group was working on Africa with Ferintosh Primary School on 9th March.

The P5 -7 class wanted to know about our relationship with Africa and the impact fair trade can have.

Besides activities with Janis they were lucky that an Oxfam field officer from Zimbabwe was visiting that day so Janis was able to take her into the school.

The pupils had many interesting questions for her.

P7s at Drakies Primary  investigate  wider energy issues
Using photographs to increase thinking and working in small groups many issues were raised.  Questions such as  where does energy come from, how does it  impact on our working lives and our lifestyles.
Ultimately we were being  encouraged  to question our values and attitudes to it.  Do we take energy in the form of electricity  for granted?
